Once the disease begins, no medication treats measles. However, your doctor may offer treatments to care for cough, eye symptoms, and fever. Aspirin and aspirin-like products cannot be used as they can cause a life-threatening condition called Reye's syndrome.
Never give aspirin to a child with chickenpox. A deadly disease called Reye syndrome has been associated with children taking aspirin, especially if they have chickenpox. Be sure to check any other over-the-counter medications for aspirin or salicylates because these are often found mixed with over-the-counter cold medications.
Cold and itch travel along the same nerve fibers, the use of cold can "jam the circuits" and deaden itch. Methods of applying cold include cool water, either by running tap water over the affected area or placing a cold clean washcloth on the skin; cool showers; and ice packs, either the commercially available type or ice cubes in a plastic bag.
Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflammatory steroid cream. Its low potency makes it safe for self-care. Hydrocortisone blocks allergic/immune skin reactions which trigger eczematous rashes, and can speed healing of inflamed and cracked skin regardless of the cause. Hydrocortisone is probably the strongest anti-itching cream available.
In the patch test, many small samples of common and suspected causative agents, known as allergens, are applied to the skin (typically on the upper back) under adhesive tape. The skin under the patches is evaluated first after 48 hours, when the patches are removed, and then again at 96 hours. It often takes the skin several days to produce a visible reaction. If the substance produces a characteristic red, usually itchy rash, the person is probably allergic to it. Sometimes the substances produce an irritation that is not a true allergic reaction.
For itching of any cause, bathing should be kept brief and preferably in cool or lukewarm water with very little or no soap. The skin should be patted dry gently rather than rubbed vigorously. Many people with itching benefit from an over-the-counter moisturizing cream applied right after bathing. The moisturizer should be odorless and colorless, because additives that provide color or scent may irritate the skin and may even cause itching. Fingernails, especially children's, should be kept short to minimize abrasions from scratching. Coating the affected area with soothing compounds, such as menthol, camphor, chamomile, eucalyptus, or calamine, also may help.
Sandalwood is good for all skin types, in particular dry and oily skin and acne. Even as it has moisturizing properties, it is a mild astringent and antiseptic. Sandalwood is also soothing for cracked, chapped and irritated skin. It is also recommended for mature and tired skin as well as stretch marks and scars.
Sandalwood paste is found to be effective as an effective remedy for prickly heat. The paste applied prevents excessive sweating and heals inflamed skin.
