Apart from regular one-on-one education both before and after birth, there was no way available to give this kind of support, except for the educators to reiterate that they’ll want this info after baby is born! Books and notes have also been used… but men don’t seem to be as keen as women to read birth books … they’d watch something on TV though… but what’s available?
DVDs have been released in birth-specific areas before now, but one that encompasses a range of subjects (particularly those found in an antenatal class) was not available… until now!
Leanne Cummins is a mum with a video camera and a passion for travel and video editing. She is also a midwife, childbirth educator and lactation consultant. She saw a need for more readily available prenatal classes and was offering private education in people’s homes- a mobile prenatal class. Soon she herself was time poor. One day, when she felt pressured to fit in another private class for another time-poor Gen Y, she decided to put together a short DVD of a prenatal class for those she could not help.
Her challenge was to provide an interesting & informative birth education DVD. “I wanted to show real people, and have no product placement… pure info”, said Leanne, “no ‘lights camera action’– just real people in real situations”. Soon, there was 4.5 hours of edited footage on 3 DVDs.
The Birthing Sense DVD series hopes to address every concern that expecting and new parents may have. There are 50 topics on the DVDs, including exercise and nutrition, prenatal testing, birthing support roles and choices, breast feeding, life with a new born from a variety of perspectives and coping with change.
The Birthing Sense DVD series is unique, as it covers every topic from prenatal care through to early infancy. The information is presented in an informal interview style and covers the gamut of industry professionals from traditional sources, such as medical practitioners and midwives, through to more recently recognised specialties of hypno birth and post natal depression. The DVDs have recently been endorsed by the Australian College of Midwives, National Association of Childbirth Educators, and the Australian Breastfeeding Association.
Leanne also sends out newsletters once a month with links to more short videos relating to pregnancy, birth and adjusting to life with a new baby. Sign up for the free newsletters today: http://www.birthingsense.com/Newsletters.htm
