The Culture
Because of its location, Yucatan has had better communication and trade with America, the Caribbean, and Europe than the rest of Mexico. In 1840, Yucatan actually broke off from Mexico and declared itself an independent republic for two years. Today, Yucatan boasts the highest population of indigenous people: the Mayans.
The Maya people have lived in the Yucatan area for more than 3,000 years, leaving more than 100 archaeological sites scattered throughout the peninsula. Everything in Yucatan – from the language and the cooking to the rituals – owes some part to this Mayan influence.
The Food
Yucatecan food finds its roots in Caribbean, French, and Mayan cultures, providing diners with a very unique culinary experience.
Do you enjoy pork? Then try poc chuc, a Mayan version of barbecued pork, or cochinita pibil, a marinated pork dish that is the most famous Yucatecan food. If you prefer poultry, there's sopa de lima, a turkey, lime, and tortilla soup. If fruits are more to your taste, then you have quite the tropical variety to choose from, including oranges, grapefruits, papayas, mangoes, limes, zapotes, and bananas, just to name a few.
The Lay of the Land
Though Yucatan is warm year-round, it has marked dry and wet seasons: rainy in the summer and dry in the winter. Depending on where you go on the peninsula, you'll see two very different kinds of jungles: one arid, and another that is lush and verdant.
Yucatan also borders the Gulf of Mexico, boasting gorgeous beaches and brilliant sunsets. Just off the coast you'll find the world's second largest barrier reef, making it a perfect destination for both snowbirds and scuba divers.
Come see a different part of Mexico. The weather's fine, the drinks are cool, the food is fresh, and the music gets into your soul.
