New Student Accommodation in Falmouth

Students in Falmouth now have the opportunity to buy and/or rent accommodation designed specifically for their needs. Halls of Residence can fill up fast and this gives them alternative private accommodation but still with the communal student space for socializing with their friends. Most private accommodation for students involves sharing facilities, these purpose built accommodation breaks from this and provides private kitchen and bathrooms. They will be able to enjoy views from their accommodation over the ‘Carrick Roads’ of Falmouth harbour and beyond.

Located centrally in Falmouth the student accommodation is close to all the campuses; Wood Lane, Tremough and the Marine School. These campuses are either a short walk away or for Tremough there is a regular bus service. These links have recently been expanded and there is also a connecting walkway to Falmouth Docks Railway Station, providing branch line access to Penryn Station, a quarter of a mile from the Tremough Campus. This journey continues to the mainline station at Truro (Cornwall's cathedral city) with ongoing direct access to mainline Paddington in London.

There are several local colleges, one formerly known as Falmouth Art School is the University College of Falmouth. Here they have been turning out design graduates that have helped turn this part of Cornwall into a vibrant hub of design and the creative industries, employing graduates from many of the local colleges, and attracting work both nationally and internationally. The college offers various courses (undergraduate, postgraduate) with the principle fields being art, design and media.

Other colleges based in this area include; Exeter University which is one of the main occupants of the Tremough Campus with several of its departments based here; Camborne School of Mines which has been part of Exeter University since 1993; Dartington College of the Arts which has recently combined with University College of Falmouth.

The 'Combined Universities of Cornwall' (CUC) is a partnership of all the organisations and colleges offering higher education in Cornwall which has helped extensively in the economic regeneration of Cornwall by making further education more assessable. This has helped to increase the range of university level education available in the local area.

In between their studies there is plenty to do in Falmouth and the surrounding areas. A large sailing contingent is out racing on most evenings of the week, it is easy to get a crewing spot on some of these boats by putting your name down at one of the yacht clubs. Cornwall is also renowned for its rugged coastline and surfing beaches. There is an active social scene based around many of these activities and with internationally recognized events such as the Tall Ships held here in 1998 and back again in 2008, Falmouth Week Regatta, Oyster Festival, Falmouth Beer Festival, Concerts and other summer events.

Falmouth has invested in its future and is rapidly developing an international reputation as one of the great sailing and water sports centres of the world, indeed Falmouth has become famous as the start or finish point for many round-the-world record voyages, most notably those of Dame Ellen McArthur and the AZAB (Azores and Back) international race. The Maritime Museum located in central Falmouth covers many of these historical events amongst other interesting exhibitions.

Historically the Fal estuary's deep water and sheltered anchorage have been of strategic importance since Norman times. Henry VIII built Pendennis and St Mawes Castles on either side of the estuary to protect the safe anchorage and guard Cornwall from invasion.
